Nepal—officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal—is a landlocked country in the central Himalayas in South Asia. Nepal is divided into 7 states, 75 districts, and 744 local units, including 4 metropolitan areas, 13 sub-metropolitan areas, 246 municipal councils, and 481 villages. It has a population of 26.4 million and is the 93rd largest country by area. Bordering China to the north and India to the south, east, and west, it is the largest sovereign Himalayan state.

Nepal does not share a border with Bangladesh, which is located just 27 km (17 mi) from its southeastern tip. Nor does it share a border with Bhutan, as the Indian state of Sikkim lies between them.

Nepal has a diverse geography, including fertile plains, subalpine forested hills, and eight of the world’s ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Kathmandu is the nation’s capital and largest city. Nepal is a multiethnic nation with Nepali as its official language.

Cultural Tours

Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; it also refers to the theory and practice of traveling, the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the business of operating tours. Tourism may be international or take place within the traveler’s own country. The World Tourism Organization defines tourism more broadly, in terms that go “beyond the common perception of tourism as being limited to vacation activities alone,” as people “traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for no more than one consecutive year for leisure, business, and other purposes.”

Tourism can be domestic or international, and international tourism has both incoming and outgoing effects on a country’s balance of payments. Today, tourism is a major source of income for many countries and affects the economies of both the source and host countries; in some cases, it is of vital importance.
